My story
Inside: Back in the day, when I was at school there was no Careers advice or meetings on how to write UCAS applications, and I don’t think anyone ever asked me what I wanted for my future. Yet, I had no doubt I wanted to become a teacher. There is absolutely nothing like seeing that epiphany moment, where a student truly ‘gets it’. Over my 23 years in various systems, the one aspect of the profession that still makes me feel absolute joy, is sitting down with my student and tailoring a session just for them. Knowing their needs and struggles, and most importantly, what is holding them back from success. Often, they don’t know that themselves. But teaching is a funny old game, based on translating student speak into real life solutions and seeing that proverbial light switching on. There’s truly nothing like it.
I started my career in the most wonderful Department at All Saint’s School in Dagenham. My colleagues had humour and passion that united us all. The Head of Department and his wife sparked a love of the profession which has never left, and for that I am so grateful. The kids were loyal and, although they certainly challenged that new teacher, they shaped who I have become in the most positive of ways.
At the beautiful Whitgift School in Croydon, I avoided being too badly attacked on a daily basis by the peacocks. Hard, as they would scroll into the classrooms. This was a school which allowed me to extend students in both English and Philosophy. I was introduced to teaching Year 6 which was glorious for a Secondary School teacher. They were positive bundles of questions and explorations.
Whilst in Vellore, Southern India, the children had nothing, but in their simple lives there was a radiance and pleasure in the smallest things which I will never forget. Colour and laughter filled every lesson.
I was fortunate enough to tutor boys from Westminster in London, and it was during these years I forged a love of the individualised learning only tutoring can give time to.
At Stamford School, thinking back to 2020, none of us could have imagined what was about to take hold of our lives, family and not least the education system. Whilst struggling to come to terms with the loss of loved ones, teachers were further challenged by a new way of teaching online. But I realised quite quickly that these sessions allowed my students time with me that both inspired and furthered their knowledge and understanding in a way we simply couldn’t find time for in the classroom and busy school day.
I started doing these sessions every day for my students, and quickly realised that they were learning quicker, but just as importantly, they were gaining confidence. Their grades went up significantly. So, in a nutshell did their wellbeing. This is a safe space, that challenges kindly.
And of course, students love seeing my dogs – a massive part of my wellbeing!

What people are saying about us…
A Review of Exceptional Tutoring for My Neurodiverse Son: As a parent, finding the right support for your child can feel like a daunting task, especially when your child has unique learning needs. My son, who is neurodiverse, started his A-Level journey two terms late, and I was concerned about how he would catch up with the curriculum and manage the pressure. That’s when we found Faye, and I can honestly say she was a game-changer.
From the very first session, it was clear that Faye was different. She didn’t just dive straight into teaching the material; instead, she took the time to get to know my son’s learning style. She approached everything with a level of empathy and understanding that immediately put him at ease. It’s not every tutor who takes the time to break things down and make sure the student truly understands the material in a way that makes sense to them, but she did exactly that.
What impressed me most was how she adapted her teaching methods to suit my son’s needs. She wasn’t just teaching from a textbook—she was teaching in a way that resonated with him. Whether that was through hands-on examples, visual aids, or breaking down complex concepts into digestible parts, Faye showed an incredible ability to engage and connect with him.
But it wasn’t just about the sessions themselves. Faye also gave my son great tips and strategies for independent study, beyond the time they spent together. She encouraged him to work smarter, not just harder, and her guidance helped him build confidence in his abilities, something that had been lacking before. It was clear that her investment went beyond just tutoring; she genuinely cared about his success.
Again, thank you for all your support the last two years… you have truly been a wonderful teacher whose support has always been valued. Good luck with your next adventure in tutoring… I’m sure you will absolutely smash it!
Throughout Faye’s time at Stamford School, she has demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication as a teacher of Philosophy and Ethics. She has showcased intellectual engagement, critical thinking and a passion for fostering ethical reasoning amongst her students. Faye encourages students to analyse, debate and apply ethical principles to real life issues and situations. Her classroom environment promotes open discussion, critical inquiry, and respect for diverse perspectives. Beyond the classroom, Faye is professional, reliable and committed to academic excellence. Faye’s skills and educational experience ensure that her students are truly inspired to achieve high standards throughout their learning journey.
Faye has worked within the sixth form team for many years, and I have had the good fortune to work with her directly for the last 4 years. Her commitment and care of her tutees was second to none. She used 121s to build effective relationships with her tutees where they benefited from the wise and considered advice she provided. Faye, also led the Philosophy and Ethics department which benefited from her reflective and nuanced approach. Her students were extremely complimentary of her subject knowledge and teaching approach and loved the positive and stimulating learning environment she created where all students felt comfortable and that their contributions would be warmly welcomed. She is a great loss to the school community, and any tutees will be incredibly fortunate to be guided by her in the future.
